How do crowdfunding refunds work on Shopify?

If an all-or-nothing campaign does not reach its goal by the deadline, you owe your backers their money back. Fundcap makes that a single action instead of a spreadsheet and a hundred manual refunds.

What the bulk refund does

You mark the campaign failed, and Fundcap opens the refund runner. It works through every backer order in small batches, refunding the campaign product's line items on each one through Shopify's own refund system. Each buyer is emailed a refund confirmation automatically, because that is exactly what your widget promised them at checkout.

It is safe to run more than once

The refund runner is resumable. You can close the window and come back, and it picks up where it left off. Orders that were already refunded (including any you refunded by hand) are detected and skipped, never double-refunded. If a single order cannot be refunded for some reason, the runner reports it and keeps going with the rest.

What it does not refund

On an order that also contains other products, only the campaign item is refunded, so the rest of the order still ships. Shipping is refunded only when the campaign item was the entire order. And processing fees are a separate topic worth reading about.
