What happens if a crowdfunding campaign misses its goal?

Short answer: every backer gets a full refund, sent back through Shopify to their original payment method, and nobody has to ask for it. That is the promise printed on every Fundcap campaign: charged now, automatically refunded if the goal is missed. This article walks the timeline of a missed goal from the moment the deadline passes, what you do, what your backers see, and the one real cost you should know about.

First, the deadline passes

When the countdown hits zero, the widget stops taking new orders and shows the final total. Nothing happens to the money at that exact moment. Backer payments were real Shopify orders, charged at checkout, so the funds are sitting in your normal Shopify payouts. Fundcap never moves money on its own. The next step is yours: you look at the final number and mark the campaign as failed. If you came in just short and are tempted to ship anyway, be careful. Your campaign page promised all or nothing, and keeping that promise, then relaunching with a better goal, is worth more than one narrow save.

You mark it failed, then refund everyone in one click

Marking the campaign as failed does two things. The public widget updates so visitors can see the campaign did not fund, and the bulk refund becomes available. One click sends a refund for every campaign order through Shopify itself, using the same refund system as any other order in your store. There is no separate escrow account and no third party holding the money. The deeper mechanics are covered in how crowdfunding refunds work on Shopify. Here is what it looks like from each side:

  • Backers do nothing. The automatic part of the promise is theirs: no forms, no support tickets, no chasing anyone down. The refund simply arrives.
  • Each backer gets the standard Shopify refund email from your store, the same notification they would receive for any refunded order. It looks familiar and official because it is.
  • Money goes back to the original payment method. How fast it lands is decided by the card networks and the backer's bank, not by Fundcap or Shopify. A few business days is normal.
  • Your backer list is still yours. You can export every backer as a CSV before or after refunding, because these people bought on your own store, not on someone else's platform.

The one real cost: processing fees

Here is the part worth knowing before you launch, not after. When you refund an order, Shopify, like most payment processors, does not return the original processing fee. So on a failed campaign, backers get one hundred percent of their money back, but you absorb the processing fees from the original charges. This is not a Fundcap fee. Fundcap takes no percentage of your raise and no per-order cut, so those unreturned processing fees are the only real cost of a missed goal. It is a small amount per order, but it scales with how much you raised, so budget for it. We walk through the exact numbers in processing fees on refunds.

What to say to your backers

Send a short message the same day you run the refunds. Do not apologize for three paragraphs and do not spin it into a victory. Something like this works: "Thanks for backing the campaign. We set an all-or-nothing goal and came in short, so your order has been refunded in full. The money is on its way back to your original payment method, and you do not need to do anything. If we relaunch with a new version, you will hear about it first." That last line matters more than it looks. A missed goal is not a verdict on your store. It is a cheap answer about one product at one price, and you got that answer before spending anything on inventory, which is the whole point of testing demand this way. There is more on that in validate demand before buying inventory. Your backer CSV is the warm list for the relaunch.

Fundcap costs $19 per month flat, with a 14-day free trial. There is no percentage of the raise and no per-order fees, so if a campaign misses its goal, the processing fees above are the whole cost. You can build your next campaign for free, and the plan only starts when you take it live.
